Green Quarter, Ulaanbaatar - Mongolia
The city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia is a reflection of both blending and contrasts among the modern/global and the Mongolian traditional standard of living.
The city of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, surrounded by four mountains and hill slopes, such as Chingelti Uul (in the north), Bogd Uul (in the south), Bayanzurkh Uul (in the east) and Songino Kairkhan Uul (in the west) is a reflection of both blending and contrasts among the modern/global and the Mongolian traditional standard of living.
Speaking of GOM Sustainable Development Strategies, has been working on country’s economic development and urbanization. It also had a tendency to ease migration pressure on Ulaanbaatar, and narrow the development gap between the urban and rural areas by providing houses and infrastructure for all of its citizens.
The Green Quarter is planned to have a central boulevard full with public buildings for social, cultural and commercial activities.
We decided to name the intervention area as “The Green Quarter” (GQ) aiming to apply sustainable planning and constructing methods. The Green Quarter is planned to have a central boulevard full with public buildings for social, cultural and commercial activities. This boulevard is a successful community space for the usage of the residents of the area.
Since the area is surrounded by two rivers, we highlighted them by adding another channel passing in the middle of the boulevard, meanwhile, the quarter is full of trees, vegetation and other green areas. All these contribute on improving the air quality, thus providing a better environment for the citizens.
Design of the residential buildings derives from the architecture, symbolism and the way people live in Ger areas. Since their construction is based on specific guidelines and spiritual beliefs, we extracted the philosophy and symbols they use in order to generate our concept. Among these Mongolian symbols are alkhan khee (unending strength and constant movement), khorlo toono (the cosmic order), and five elements of the cosmos (fire, water, earth, metal and wood), bringing strength and protection to the people.
